Erdoğan and Sharif Discuss Tech Innovation to Boost Türkiye-Pakistan Partnership

In a significant diplomatic engagement, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif convened in Istanbul to discuss the expansion of strategic cooperation in various sectors, including trade, defense, energy, infrastructure, and regional security. The high-level meeting took place at Vahdettin Palace, where both leaders, accompanied by senior officials, delved into detailed discussions on strengthening ties between their nations.

A major focus of the talks was on boosting bilateral trade and investment. Currently, trade between Turkey and Pakistan stands at approximately $1.2–1.35 billion, a figure both leaders are keen to increase towards their long-term target of $5 billion. In pursuit of this goal, they explored avenues for increased Turkish investment in Pakistan’s energy, agriculture, transport, and technology sectors. This economic collaboration is seen as a pivotal step in enhancing the overall partnership between the two countries.

Defense collaboration emerged as a central theme in the discussions, with both nations expressing a strong interest in advancing military ties. The leaders addressed opportunities for cooperation in military equipment, joint training exercises, intelligence sharing, and future co-production initiatives. These efforts aim to fortify the defense capabilities of both countries and build a robust framework for security cooperation.

The meeting underscored the importance of the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council, a platform designed to facilitate collaboration across multiple sectors. Both leaders reiterated their commitment to working closely on regional developments, particularly in the Middle East and Afghanistan, and on counter-terrorism efforts. Enhanced digital connectivity and infrastructure development were also highlighted as critical areas for collaboration.

Following their extensive talks, Erdoğan and Sharif were expected to hold a joint press conference to announce the outcomes of their discussions and any new agreements reached. The meeting represents a significant stride towards deepening the strategic partnership between Turkey and Pakistan, with both nations eager to build on their shared interests and goals.
