Trump Boosts Steel Tariffs to 50%, Hails Nippon Steel Deal Amidst Confusion

Date:

Donald Trump announced a dramatic increase in steel import tariffs to 50% on Friday, celebrating what he called a “blockbuster” agreement involving Japan’s Nippon Steel and US Steel. Speaking from a US Steel plant in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, Trump declared the tariff hike would “further secure the steel industry in the United States,” asserting that “nobody is going to get around that.” This move doubles the previous 25% tariff.
Following his remarks, Trump confirmed via social media that the 50% tariffs would also extend to imported aluminum, effective June 4. He stated this would be “yet another BIG jolt of great news for our wonderful steel and aluminum workers.” The immediate impact on existing trade deals, including the recent reduction to zero tariffs on UK steel and aluminum, remains unclear. This announcement follows a federal appeals court decision temporarily upholding his tariffs, despite a trade court’s attempt to block them. Trump’s authority to unilaterally raise tariffs stems from Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act, a national security provision.
Despite Trump’s enthusiastic support for the deal, the precise nature of the Nippon Steel and US Steel relationship has raised questions, even among his allies. Months prior, Trump had expressed being “totally against” Nippon Steel’s $14.9 billion bid for US Steel. The United Steelworkers union had also urged him to reject the bid, dismissing Nippon’s promises as “flashy” and alleging they sought to “undercut our domestic industry from the inside.” Trump now refers to the arrangement as a “partnership,” insisting US Steel will “stay an American company.” However, US Steel’s own website describes the transaction as “US Steel’s agreement to be acquired by NSC” and includes multiple references to “Nippon Steel’s acquisition of US Steel.”
