President Donald Trump’s frustration with NATO allies boiled over in a recent social media post, where he blasted member nations for continuing to buy Russian oil while expecting the U.S. to lead on sanctions. In his statement on Truth Social, the President established a new, firm condition for U.S. action against Russia. He said he is “ready” to impose major sanctions, but not until every NATO country has first agreed to, and implemented, a complete ban on Russian oil imports. Trump also channeled his frustration towards China, Russia’s key economic enabler. He put forth the idea that NATO should collectively punish Beijing with massive tariffs ranging from 50% to 100%. This would serve as a penalty for its support of Moscow and as leverage to hasten the end of the war in Ukraine, after which the tariffs would be removed.
