Theatrical Phenomenon: Netflix’s K-Pop Film Earns Big at Box Office

Date:

A streaming hit has officially become a theatrical phenomenon, as Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters grossed an estimated $18-$20 million to top the weekend box office. The animated film’s special two-day sing-along event drew massive crowds, easily outperforming expectations and established competitors like the horror film Weapons. This marks a rare and significant theatrical victory for the streaming service.
The film had already proven its immense appeal on Netflix, where it ranks as the second-most-watched movie of all time. This massive viewership, combined with a chart-topping soundtrack, created a powerful cultural moment and a dedicated fanbase. The theatrical event was perfectly timed to capitalize on this momentum, offering fans a unique and interactive way to experience the film.
Held in 1,700 cinemas, the event was a resounding success, with an estimated 1,150 screenings selling out completely. The strong turnout demonstrated that even content available at home can draw large audiences to theaters if presented as a special event. While AMC Theaters sat out, other major exhibitors reaped the rewards of hosting the popular film.
KPop Demon Hunters tells the story of a girl group, Huntr/x, who balance their pop careers with a secret mission to fight demons. This fresh narrative, coupled with its incredible box office performance, has made it a standout success story in a summer season that has otherwise seen lackluster revenues compared to pre-pandemic years.
