Finland Postpones Recognition of Palestine

Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo has stated that his government is not currently preparing to recognize Palestine as a state. Speaking at a meeting of the National Coalition Party, Orpo said that the four-party alliance government is still assessing whether the necessary conditions for recognition have been met.
The issue has caused division within Finland’s ruling coalition, with the Finns Party and Christian Democratic Party opposing the move, while most opposition parties are in favor. Although President Alexander Stubb has expressed readiness to recognize a Palestinian state if the government proposes it, Orpo believes the issue requires further discussion and careful consideration, as recognition can only be done once.
Orpo reiterated his party’s commitment to a two-state solution and emphasized the need to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He also urged Israel to reconsider its plans to take control of Gaza City, stating that such an action would not be helpful to the situation.
