Heavy rainfall is intensifying in Istanbul, heightening the risk of flooding, waterlogging, and transportation disruptions across the city. According to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s Disaster Coordination Center, showers that affected parts of the city earlier in the morning are expected to strengthen around 11 a.m. and persist through the afternoon before easing by 4 p.m.
The sudden change in weather has brought a sharp drop in temperatures, which have fallen to around 14°C and are predicted to remain below the seasonal average throughout the day. This shift is attributed to the collision of cold air aloft with warm, moisture-laden air near the surface, creating conditions ripe for thunderstorms, lightning, and strong showers.
Meteorological authorities have issued warnings for Istanbul and several provinces in the Marmara and western Black Sea regions about the potential for sudden flooding, strong winds, lightning, and disruptions to transport. Residents are advised to remain cautious and prepare for adverse weather conditions.
Despite the current inclement weather, forecasts suggest a reprieve is on the horizon. Conditions are expected to improve from Thursday, with temperatures rising to around 21°C and no significant rainfall anticipated.
