Stubb: Europe-Russia Ties Can’t Return to Normal Without Lasting Peace in Ukraine

Date:

President Alexander Stubb stated on Monday that Europe’s relationship with Russia cannot revert to its previous state unless a fair and lasting peace is achieved in Ukraine.
Speaking at the Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference in Åland, Stubb emphasized that Russia’s violations of international norms must have enduring consequences. He noted that a decision to break common rules cannot be left unpunished, and even after a resolution, relations with Russia cannot return to what they were.
Stubb highlighted that the international community’s efforts to end the war in Ukraine continue to fluctuate between hope and despair. He stressed that any future settlement must guarantee Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, ensuring it remains an independent and self-determined state.
Reflecting Finland’s firm stance within the European Union and NATO, Stubb reiterated that sustainable peace must uphold Ukraine’s rights under international law, without specifying a timeline or form for a potential agreement.
