Democrats are in an uproar following the passage of Donald Trump’s controversial budget bill, labeling it a “dark day” for the nation. The legislation, which narrowly cleared the House with no Democratic support, has ignited fierce condemnation from party leaders. Critics are particularly incensed by its provisions that drastically expand immigration enforcement while simultaneously slashing vital social benefits for working-class Americans.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a vocal critic, highlighted the bill’s stark contradictions, pointing to permanent tax breaks for billionaires alongside the sunsetting of tax breaks for low-income tipped workers. She further emphasized the devastating impact of cuts to Medicaid expansion and Affordable Care Act subsidies, which will leave many vulnerable individuals without crucial health coverage. The bill also slashes SNAP food assistance benefits, threatening food security for millions.
Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin asserted that the bill sends a clear message: “if you are not a billionaire, we don’t give a damn about you.” He accused the GOP of prioritizing wealthy donors while their constituents face job losses, medical care cuts, and even death as a direct consequence of the bill. Martin vowed that Democrats would mobilize to ensure public awareness of those responsible for this “worst bill in our nation’s history.”
The outrage extends to comments made by Republican leaders, with Senator Mitch McConnell reportedly stating, “I know a lot of us are hearing from people back home about Medicaid. But they’ll get over it.” Senator Joni Ernst’s dismissive remark, “People are not… well, we all are going to die,” further fueled Democratic fury. These statements are being used by Democrats as potent attack lines for next year’s midterm elections, painting Republicans as indifferent to the suffering of ordinary Americans.
