Putin Claims Momentum as Zelenskyy Points to Russian ‘Sabotage’ Tankers

Date:

Moscow – President Vladimir Putin has claimed his forces have unstoppable momentum in Ukraine, while his counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has accused Russia of using oil tankers for sabotage. These parallel statements highlight the diverging narratives and tactics defining the conflict.
Putin told his top military officials that Russian troops had taken control of nearly 5,000 square kilometers of Ukrainian land in 2025. He confidently asserted that Moscow now holds the “complete strategic initiative” and that this advantage cannot be reversed by Ukrainian strikes.
In Kyiv, President Zelenskyy drew attention to a less visible aspect of the war. He alleged that Russia is leveraging its tanker fleet not just for economic gain but also for “reconnaissance and even sabotage activities,” a claim that points to a strategy of hybrid warfare.
Zelenskyy projected strength in his response, stating that Ukraine and its allies are already developing a plan to counter this threat. “It is entirely possible to stop this,” he declared, signaling a coordinated effort to secure maritime operations.
The backdrop to these events is the looming threat of further escalation. Putin issued a stark warning to the US, stating that providing Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine would be a grave miscalculation. He claimed it would necessitate US military involvement and lead to the complete collapse of their bilateral relationship.
