President Donald Trump gathered congressional leaders and cabinet members at the White House Thursday, pushing hard for his comprehensive tax-and-spending legislation as questions swirl about whether it can pass the Senate. The president’s direct appeal comes as Senate Majority Leader John Thune considers scheduling an initial vote for Friday, working toward Trump’s July 4th deadline for signing the bill into law.
The legislation faces significant hurdles in the upper chamber, where Republicans may lack sufficient votes for passage. Even if it clears the Senate, any modifications could create problems in the House, where the bill previously passed by just one vote and might require another round of voting on a revised version.
During his presentation, Trump addressed an audience including police officers, firefighters, working families, and parents of a woman allegedly killed by an undocumented immigrant. He emphasized how the legislation would benefit ordinary Americans through new tax cuts, extensions of existing lower rates from his first presidency, and increased funding for immigration enforcement. “There are hundreds of things here. It’s so good,” Trump declared, urging attendees to contact their representatives.
However, the bill faces fierce Democratic opposition, with critics labeling it the “big, ugly betrayal.” They particularly object to proposed Medicaid cuts that would represent the largest reduction in the program’s history since 1965, potentially stripping 16 million Americans of health insurance. The legislation also targets SNAP food assistance funding, raising concerns about its impact on vulnerable populations.
