Tesla’s Robotaxi Rollout Hits Early Snag as US Regulators Scrutinize Erratic Driving Videos

Date:

The highly anticipated launch of Tesla’s Robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, over the past weekend has quickly attracted the attention of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Following the emergence of numerous videos depicting the autonomous vehicles exhibiting erratic behavior, including speeding and veering into incorrect lanes, the primary US transportation safety regulator has formally requested additional information from Tesla. This inquiry casts a shadow over Elon Musk’s ambitious plans for the future of the automaker.
Despite Tesla’s efforts to heavily promote the initial, limited rollout through pro-Tesla influencers, the very footage intended for positive publicity now appears to be a key piece of evidence in the NHTSA’s scrutiny. These videos, rather than showcasing seamless autonomy, frequently highlighted instances where the Robotaxis struggled to adhere to basic traffic laws, sparking concerns about their readiness for widespread deployment. The agency’s swift response underscores its commitment to investigating potential safety defects in new automotive technologies.
One particularly concerning video, shared by a Tesla investor, captured a Robotaxi misjudging a left turn, briefly entering an oncoming traffic lane, and then crossing a double yellow line to correct its course. While no other vehicles were in the oncoming lane at the time, the incident raises questions about the software’s ability to navigate complex urban environments reliably. Another video showed a pro-Tesla YouTuber praising the car for exceeding the speed limit, further fueling safety concerns.
This latest development adds to existing regulatory pressures on Tesla, which already faces an open NHTSA investigation, initiated in 2024, into the safety of its “Full-Self Driving” (FSD) mode, particularly under conditions of reduced visibility. With Tesla’s sales declining and profits dropping significantly in the first quarter of 2025, the success of the Robotaxi program has become increasingly vital for the company’s future, making regulatory scrutiny all the more impactful.
