Canada Scraps Tech Tax Amid US Pressure, Resumes Trade Talks

Date:

Canada has abruptly withdrawn its controversial digital services tax, set to impact major US tech companies, following intense pressure from the White House. The move, announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney, comes as a direct response to US President Donald Trump’s halt of trade negotiations, which he had linked to the proposed levy. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that Prime Minister Carney “caved” to American demands.
The tax, first proposed in 2020, aimed to ensure that large American tech giants generating revenue from Canadian users would contribute to the country’s tax base. Companies like Meta, Amazon, Google’s parent Alphabet, Uber, and Airbnb were expected to pay a 3% levy, with initial payments due on Monday. The rescinded tax was projected to generate over US2billioninitsfirstyearandmorethanUS7 billion over five years.
Prime Minister Carney clarified that his decision was made to revive crucial trade discussions with the United States. Trump had previously terminated all trade talks, calling the digital services tax a “direct and blatant attack” on the US. White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett confirmed that Canada’s reversal “absolutely” meant both sides would resume negotiations.
The reversal highlights the ongoing complexities in US-Canada trade relations, particularly as Canada seeks the removal of tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on steel, aluminum, and automobiles. Critics, like law professor Michael Geist, argue that Canada’s handling of the digital services tax demonstrates a misjudgment of the tech sector and an overestimation of Canada’s market influence.
