Thailand and Cambodia End Deadly Skirmishes With Immediate Ceasefire Pact

Date:

Keys to resolving one of Southeast Asia’s most persistent border disputes fell into place this week, as Thailand and Cambodia ended five days of heavy fighting with an unconditional ceasefire deal. The violence had surged to levels unseen since 2011, displacing tens of thousands.
International mediation in Malaysia saw the two sides agree to halt hostilities, with top military officials scheduled to meet and help solidify the fragile truce. Disputed jungle borderlands, rich with ancient history, lay at the heart of the fighting.
The ceasefire was hard-won, as trust remains thin and charged accusations persist. Still, leaders hope renewed diplomatic and military dialogue will stop the tide of violence, at least for now.
Massive relief operations have been mobilized, serving families separated in the scramble for safety during the crisis.
