Trump Calls Strait of Hormuz Disruption a Red Line as Iran Attacks Gulf States Daily

Date:

President Donald Trump drew a stark red line on Friday, warning Iran that any further interference with shipping through the Strait of Hormuz would trigger immediate US strikes on the country’s oil infrastructure at Kharg Island. His warning came on a day when Iran had continued its attacks on Gulf state infrastructure, forcing Saudi Arabia to intercept nearly 50 drones and causing damage and casualties in Oman and Dubai. Trump also took time to call Iranian leaders “deranged scumbags” and declare their deaths a personal honor.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints, with roughly one-fifth of global oil and gas supplies passing through the narrow waterway between Iran and Oman. Iran has effectively blocked the strait through ongoing attacks on commercial and military shipping, a tactic that has alarmed governments and energy markets worldwide. The US said it was “dealing with” Iranian attacks in the strait and insisted that the waterway had not yet been mined by Tehran.
Kharg Island, where Trump threatened to strike next, is the nerve centre of Iran’s oil export operations. US forces already destroyed every military facility on the island on Friday in what Trump called one of the most powerful bombing raids in Middle Eastern history. The broader US-Israeli military campaign has now struck more than 15,000 targets since the war began, with Israel alone carrying out over 200 strikes in the previous day.
Iran responded to the campaign against it with daily strikes on Gulf state infrastructure and ongoing missile and drone barrages against Israel. Saudi Arabia neutralized close to 50 Iranian drones in a single day. Debris from an intercepted Iranian projectile struck a building at the Dubai International Financial Centre, a prestigious economic free zone. Two people died in Oman when drones struck an industrial area in the Sohar region. Qatar issued evacuation orders in parts of Doha before confirming successful missile interceptions.
The military and human costs of the conflict continue to spiral. Iran has reported over 1,300 deaths. Lebanon has recorded 600 or more killed and 800,000 displaced. The United States has lost 13 service members, with six dying in a tanker plane crash in Iraq and eight more suffering severe injuries. France lost a soldier in Iraq to a pro-Iranian militia drone strike. European governments scrambled to open diplomatic channels with Tehran in hopes of negotiating a safe corridor for their commercial vessels through the increasingly dangerous strait.
