Zelensky Flags Border Tensions with Poland and Hungary Amid New US Arms Push

While pursuing a major expansion of its military arsenal with US support, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has raised alarms about growing tensions on its western borders, citing alleged airspace violations involving Poland and Hungary. These incidents add a complex diplomatic layer to the ongoing conflict and Ukraine’s security calculations.
Zelensky made a serious claim that on September 10, a swarm of 92 Russian drones was directed towards Poland, with 19 of them successfully breaching Polish airspace. Ukraine intercepted the majority, he said. This would represent a direct Russian encroachment on NATO territory. Separately, Zelensky reported the sighting of a Hungarian drone in Ukraine, an allegation that Budapest denies but which Kyiv is pursuing aggressively.
These border flare-ups underscore the urgent need for Ukraine to strengthen its defenses and offensive reach. Against this backdrop, Zelensky confirmed he is moving forward with plans to acquire long-range weapons from the United States. An agreement in principle was reached with President Donald Trump, and a Ukrainian team is now preparing for technical talks in Washington to finalize the deal.
The planned weapons purchases are substantial, intended to augment an existing $90 billion military aid agreement. The goal is to provide Ukrainian forces with the ability to strike high-value targets far behind the front lines, disrupting enemy logistics and command structures more effectively.
In addition to seeking American weapons, Ukraine is also poised to become a supplier. Zelensky noted that the US has shown interest in purchasing Ukrainian drones, and talks on this are set to begin. This, combined with the recent arrival of a Patriot air defense system from Israel, illustrates Ukraine’s multi-faceted approach to security: bolstering defenses, increasing offensive power, and addressing immediate cross-border threats.
