Date:

In a bid to bolster economic ties and foster trade and investment, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal engaged in separate discussions with Finland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Riikka Purra, as well as Minister of Economic Affairs Sakari Puisto. These meetings aimed at enhancing cooperation between India and Finland, focusing on key sectors such as digitalisation, innovation, research and development, startups, and business collaborations.

The dialogues delved into the potential for expanding partnerships in emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, 6G, quantum technologies, semiconductors, space, and sustainability. Both parties recognized the importance of these areas in driving future economic growth and development, and expressed a mutual interest in exploring avenues for collaboration that could benefit both nations.

A significant element of the discussions was the proposed India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Minister Goyal and his Finnish counterparts considered how this agreement could serve to enhance bilateral trade, attract investment, and generate new opportunities for businesses in both countries. The FTA is seen as a critical step towards deepening economic relations between India and the European Union.

These meetings occur at a time when India and the European Union are actively engaged in negotiations aimed at crafting a comprehensive trade agreement. The goal of these negotiations is to fortify economic relations and boost cooperation across strategic sectors, aligning with the broader objectives discussed in the meetings between India and Finland.
