President Alexander Stubb said on Tuesday that while important progress was achieved in Washington discussions on peace in Ukraine, significant work still remains. He attended high-level talks hosted in the White House with leaders from Ukraine and Europe, where three key steps forward were identified.
According to the president’s office, the talks focused on security guarantees, a planned meeting between the presidents of Ukraine and Russia, and a trilateral meeting involving Ukraine, the United States, and Russia. Stubb emphasized that despite Finland’s small size, its perspective carries weight due to its shared border with Russia.
He noted that the country’s role in the negotiations is valuable, particularly as it stands alongside Ukraine as one of the few directly neighboring Russia. “Our influence is limited, but our viewpoint has relevance,” Stubb said.
The Washington meeting brought together Ukraine, the United States, and several European leaders, underlining the collective effort to push forward peace initiatives while strengthening security commitments.
