Erdoğan Urges Stricter Policies Against Dominant Digital Algorithms in Technology Sector

Date:

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has expressed concerns about the increasing power of social media algorithms, which he termed as “algorithm fascism.” He asserted that these digital mechanisms are blurring the lines between truth and misinformation, making it difficult for people to differentiate between reality and illusion. Erdoğan shared these thoughts at the Second Communication Council in Ankara, emphasizing that the growing influence of digital platforms is shaping public opinion in unprecedented ways.

Highlighting the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence and communication technologies, Erdoğan pointed out that while these developments have revolutionized how information is shared, they have also accelerated the spread of disinformation. He warned that social media platforms have the potential to alter how individuals perceive events and could even influence historical narratives, thereby posing a threat to cultural values and social unity.

The president underscored the objectives of the Communication Council, which seeks to craft Türkiye’s future communication strategy. By bringing together government officials, academics, media representatives, and civil society experts, the council aims to strengthen public communication policies in alignment with the country’s long-term goals.

In addition to discussing the impact of social media, Erdoğan addressed the ongoing investigation into the Ahbap charity. He assured that those accused of exploiting public trust in the aftermath of the 2023 earthquakes are being held accountable through legal proceedings, reinforcing the government’s commitment to justice and transparency.
