Türkiye, TRNC Highlight Tech Advances at Cyprus Peace Operation Anniversary

Date:

The 52nd anniversary of the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation is being observed with official ceremonies in Lefkoşa (Nicosia) by Türkiye and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). This commemoration unfolds amidst ongoing political tensions with the Greek Cypriot administration. Leading the Turkish delegation attending these events is Türkiye’s Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz. In a significant move to bolster their presence in the Eastern Mediterranean, Türkiye has deployed naval vessels for public visits and is set to open a new maritime traffic monitoring center in Famagusta.

As these anniversaries take place, the stalemate in negotiations over Cyprus persists. Leaders from the Turkish Cypriot community continue to push for a two-state solution underpinned by the principle of sovereign equality. They have voiced concerns over the lack of international recognition for the TRNC and criticized the Greek Cypriot authorities for allegedly heightening regional tensions through new military alliances.

Turkish Cypriot officials have also emphasized the importance of Türkiye’s role as a guarantor state, which they consider vital for the island’s security. Meanwhile, the United Nations is scheduled to initiate fresh discussions later this month aimed at advancing the Cyprus peace talks, which have long been at an impasse.
