Advanced Technology Fuels Türkiye’s New Oil Exploration in Western Black Sea

Date:

Türkiye is gearing up to initiate the drilling of an oil-focused well in the western Black Sea, as part of its ongoing initiative to enhance its domestic oil and natural gas reserves. Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar mentioned that this drilling project presents significant technical challenges and could be a lengthy process. By 2026, Türkiye aims to execute six exploration wells across the western, central, and eastern Black Sea regions.

In recent years, Türkiye has significantly boosted its offshore exploration capacities, now boasting a fleet of six deep-water drilling vessels. Several of these vessels are actively engaged in exploration and development tasks within the Black Sea. This expansion underscores Türkiye’s strategy to bolster its energy independence and reduce reliance on imports by strengthening domestic production capabilities.

The nation is also on track to increase production from its Black Sea gas fields, with plans to double output by the end of the year. Following multiple discoveries since 2020, Türkiye’s estimated gas reserves in the Black Sea have surged to approximately 785 billion cubic meters. Currently, production stands at around 9.5 million cubic meters daily, which is sufficient to fulfill the natural gas needs of about 4 million households. The government anticipates that production will escalate to between 16 and 17 billion cubic meters annually by 2028.

In addition to expanding its exploration efforts, Türkiye is enhancing its LNG infrastructure and pipeline connectivity, which are key components of its ambition to become a regional energy transit hub. The country is investigating additional routes that could facilitate the transport of gas from the Middle East to European markets, further solidifying its strategic position in the regional energy landscape.
