In a stark warning about the global implications of regional conflicts, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan emphasized the interconnectedness of today’s world, suggesting that no nation is immune to crises occurring elsewhere. Addressing a news conference after a Cabinet meeting in Ankara, Erdoğan highlighted the economic and political ripple effects of the Iran war, which are manifesting globally as inflation, supply chain issues, and energy market instability.
Erdoğan remarked on the profound consequences that regional conflicts have due to globalization and economic interdependence. “When a country in the Middle East sneezes today, a country in Latin America or Asia can easily catch a cold,” he stated, referring to the uncertainty following the February 28 attacks on Iran as a complex crisis with far-reaching impacts on global stability. He underscored the persistent volatility in fuel prices, increasing inflation, and ongoing supply chain disruptions, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, as indicators of growing global fragility.
The Turkish president expressed concern over the unpredictable extent of the economic shock’s damage, while criticizing a financial system he sees as driven by speculation and market manipulation. He accused a small group of wealthy capitalists of profiting at the expense of billions worldwide, from Africa to Asia and the Americas. Erdoğan pointed out that while middle- and lower-income families are grappling with rising living costs and diminishing purchasing power, global financial players continue to amass wealth amid instability and conflict.
Highlighting the domestic repercussions, Erdoğan criticized unjustified price hikes in Turkish markets, noting that some pricing behaviors cannot be solely attributed to production or transportation costs, especially given Türkiye’s relatively low energy input costs in Europe. He pledged that the government would maintain oversight and action against opportunistic pricing, urging businesses to assist in maintaining market stability and protecting consumers.
In addition, Erdoğan condemned Israel’s recent attacks, asserting that such actions would not deter the international community’s commitment to justice and solidarity with Palestinians. He described Israel’s assault on the Global Sumud Flotilla, which carried citizens from 40 countries, as “piracy” and “banditry,” attacking those he called “voyagers of hope” aboard the aid flotilla.
