Tech-Driven Divide Looms Over Türkiye’s CHP Amid Growing Internal Tensions

Date:

The Republican People’s Party (CHP) in Türkiye is experiencing significant internal strife, with potential ramifications for its unity and future. Former party leader Özgür Özel is reportedly on the brink of establishing a new political party, following his unsuccessful bid to reclaim leadership from Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu. This move signals a growing fracture within the CHP, as tensions over the party’s direction intensify.

While Özel’s ambition is to gather support from current CHP lawmakers, there is uncertainty about how many will actually join his proposed new movement. Supporters of Özel suggest that as many as 80 lawmakers could defect; however, party insiders estimate a lower number, possibly around 60. This discrepancy raises questions about whether Özel’s new party could realistically position itself as the main opposition force in Parliament.

The discord within the CHP is not solely about leadership but also reflects wider ideological and strategic differences about the party’s trajectory. Key figures, such as former Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, continue to wield significant influence, further complicating the internal dynamics. İmamoğlu remains a pivotal figure despite facing legal challenges, which contributes to the ongoing debate about leadership and influence within the party.

Moreover, Özel is confronted with potential legal hurdles that could impact his political future. He is currently facing several parliamentary immunity cases. If lawmakers decide to lift his immunity, it could create significant obstacles for his political endeavors and ambitions.
