The Cost of Grok: Musk’s xAI Gets Green Light for Mississippi Power Plant

Mississippi state regulators have cleared the way for Elon Musk’s xAI to operate 41 methane gas turbines at its “Colossus 2” site. The permit, issued by the MDEQ, allows the company to satisfy the massive energy requirements of its AI infrastructure. This move has been widely condemned by local families and environmental advocacy groups.
The power plant is designed to support xAI’s supercomputers, which are the driving force behind the Grok AI model. These machines require an enormous and steady flow of electricity that the local utility company is currently unable to provide. Musk’s solution has been to build a self-contained energy system using gas-fired turbines.
The “outraged” community has pointed to the company’s history of operating without permits as a sign of bad faith. Residents have complained of persistent noise and deteriorating air quality since the facility first opened its doors. The NAACP has characterized the state’s approval as a “civic crisis” that prioritizes corporate interests over public health.
Pollutants from the 41 turbines, such as nitrogen oxide and formaldehyde, are known triggers for respiratory and cardiovascular issues. Environmental lawyers have noted that the facility’s emissions will likely make it a top polluter in northern Mississippi. This is especially concerning given the pre-existing poor air quality in DeSoto and Shelby counties.
xAI’s regional expansion is only just beginning, with the company already planning its third datacenter, “Macrohardrr.” The speed of this development has outpaced the ability of local regulations to keep up, according to critics.
