Advanced Drones and Missiles Used in Houthi Strike on Saudi Base

Date:

The conflict in Yemen has escalated as Iran-backed Houthi fighters have taken responsibility for launching a missile and drone attack on a military installation in southern Saudi Arabia. The attack on the Sharurah military base was aimed at weapons depots and command-and-control centers, according to Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree. Saudi civil defense authorities confirmed that a projectile landed near the border with Yemen, injuring two individuals and causing damage to a mosque and several buildings in the area.

On the other side, Yemeni government forces have ramped up their military efforts, conducting three airstrikes in the Taiz region and targeting Houthi positions and weapons caches near the Red Sea port city of Mocha. This resurgence of hostilities follows a week-long offensive by the Houthis, during which the group seized control of much of Yemen’s Red Sea coast and several strategic islands. These gains have bolstered the Houthis’ control near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a crucial maritime corridor at the southern entrance of the Red Sea.

In a development that could have significant implications for regional trade, the Houthis have declared a maritime blockade on Saudi Red Sea ports. This move raises concerns over the stability of regional shipping lanes and energy supplies, especially as the Red Sea waterway becomes increasingly vital for Saudi oil exports due to disruptions occurring around the Strait of Hormuz. The situation underscores the ongoing geopolitical tensions, with Saudi Arabia backing Yemen’s internationally recognized government and the Houthis maintaining their alignment with Iran.

The conflict’s intensification has precipitated a severe humanitarian crisis, displacing tens of thousands of civilians who have been forced to leave their homes in search of safety. Many of the displaced are struggling to find adequate shelter in safer regions. According to the United Nations, there has been a significant rise in displacement since July, with the most recent wave of fighting claiming the lives of over 500 people. The continuing violence threatens to exacerbate Yemen’s already dire humanitarian situation and poses a risk of further destabilizing the broader Red Sea region.
