As the war in Ukraine intensifies, European leaders are gathering in Kyiv to address the country’s urgent need for air-defense enhancements amidst increasing Russian missile attacks on Ukrainian cities. This strategic meeting, known as the Coalition of the Willing, is being led by the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, with additional participation expected from other European leaders via remote communication. Notably, EU Council President Antonio Costa is also present to lend his support to the discussions.
Ukraine has been under a barrage of Russian missile strikes targeting cities like Kyiv, resulting in civilian casualties and significant damage to residential areas. In response, Ukrainian officials have consistently appealed to their allies for more air-defense systems and interceptor missiles to safeguard the population. The urgency of these requests is underscored by the fact that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has pointed out a concerning decline in the delivery of Patriot interceptor missiles. While Ukraine received 675 such missiles in 2023, the numbers are expected to drop to 364 in 2025 and further down to 264 by 2026. In preparation for the upcoming winter, Kyiv is seeking an additional 300 interceptors.
In a show of support, Britain is anticipated to announce new backing for Ukraine, while France is set to initiate local production of the long-range SCALP missile. France has also committed to providing more interceptor missiles to bolster Ukraine’s defenses against the ongoing threat. The collaborative efforts of European allies reflect a concerted push to meet Ukraine’s air-defense requirements while simultaneously maintaining diplomatic and strategic pressure on Moscow.
Ukraine’s defense strategy heavily relies on sophisticated Western air-defense systems, primarily to counter Russian ballistic missiles, which pose a significant interception challenge. As such, European partners are actively exploring avenues to increase the delivery of these essential defense systems to Ukraine. The discussions in Kyiv are pivotal in shaping a unified European response to the evolving security situation and ensuring that Ukraine receives the necessary support to protect its citizens.
