Tech Innovations in Nuclear and Defense Highlight Turkish-Canadian Talks

Date:

Turkey’s Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, is embarking on a two-day visit to Canada aimed at bolstering bilateral relations, enhancing trade, and deepening cooperation in the fields of energy and defense. The visit will commence in Toronto, where Fidan is scheduled to tour the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station. This tour underscores Turkey’s interest in leveraging Canada’s expertise in nuclear energy, as Ankara seeks to expand its cooperation in civilian nuclear energy and bolster its energy security.

During his stay, Fidan is also slated to engage with business leaders, academics, and civil society representatives. These discussions will center around fostering investment opportunities and economic collaboration between the two NATO allies. The visit reflects a broader intent to upgrade ties towards a strategic partnership, with a particular focus on increasing high-level exchanges and removing trade barriers. This includes making progress on a long-anticipated free trade agreement between the nations.

In Ottawa, Fidan will hold talks with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand. Their discussions are expected to address regional and global security issues, including the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, tensions in the Middle East, and maritime security concerns in the Strait of Hormuz. Turkey is anticipated to advocate for diplomatic solutions and emphasize the importance of continued engagement with all involved parties.

The bilateral trade relationship between Turkey and Canada is on an upward trajectory, bolstered by expanding defense cooperation and increased air connectivity. Additionally, the presence of a significant Turkish diaspora in Canada supports these growing ties. Fidan’s visit reflects a mutual interest in strengthening these connections further, underscoring the importance of collaboration between the two nations on various strategic fronts.
